Amerado: Leaders need to act to stop galamsey; songs won’t cut it.
Rapper Amerado from Ghana has stated that although songs written by famous people help increase public awareness of the galamsey issue, real change can only be brought about by decisive leadership.
While some singers have written songs about galamsey, Amerado asked in an interview with Joy FM, “Who is taking the action for us to be able to stop galamsey?”
He said, “We can perform the songs, and they may be heard all across the world, but who is really doing the work? Who is responsible for ensuring that these actions are all stopped?”
Actor Adjetey Anang takes a similar sentiment, saying while he supports demonstrations against galamsey, the creative industry’s impact is more felt through the stories they tell.
Anang added productions by the industry have “adaptations” and “inject some of these things for the audience to know that we can have the entertainment and fun but there are serious issues going on there.”
Even while plays like Latif Abubakar’s and Stonebwoy’s “Greedy Men” address the problem, galamsey still wreaks havoc on Ghana’s woods and waterways.
53 protestors were detained during recent Democracy Hub-organized demonstrations on suspicion of assembling illegally, intensifying calls for action.
