Apple releases the iPhone 16E, the first 5G modem with AI, for $599.

The latest low-cost iPhone from Apple is a little more costly, features Apple Intelligence, and is based on the iPhone 14. On Friday, pre-orders will open.

In February, a new iPhone? On Wednesday, Apple unveiled the iPhone 16E on its website, giving the iPhone SE (2022) a much-needed makeover with a completely new chip, design, and Apple Intelligence. The beginning price of the iPhone 16E is $599, which is $170 higher than that of the preceding SE, which was $429. In comparison, the standard iPhone 16 costs $799. The phone’s price places it more in the middle of competitors like the $499 Google Pixel 8A and the $650 Samsung Galaxy S24 FE.

The iPhone 16E’s design is based on the body of the iPhone 14, and it has an Action button instead of a mute switch. The Action button on the iPhone 16E will initiate Visual Intelligence searches because it does not have a Camera Control button. Instead of the lightning port found in the iPhone 14, the phone has a USB-C port. With the design of the iPhone 16E, Apple will no longer be selling phones with home buttons, which characterised the first ten years of iPhone design, starting with the original model. Apple no longer offers a genuinely tiny iPhone alternative because the iPhone 16E has a 6.1-inch screen.

However, the screen’s locked 60Hz refresh rate seems like an oversight on Apple’s part, given that most low-cost Android phones have high refresh-rate screens that start at 90Hz.

Apple makes it apparent that its AI isn’t just found in its pricey flagship products, even though phone manufacturers have gambled their success on deploying unique AI features sooner than their competitors. The iPhone 16E can run Apple Intelligence because it is powered by Apple’s A18 chip, which is also used in the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus. Because it costs less than $600 and has the same AI capabilities as its more costly siblings, the new Apple phone is a rare find.

Based on the design of the iPhone 5S, the original iPhone SE was released in 2016. “Special edition” was what SE stood for, but some of us have now changed it to “small edition.” A second-generation iPhone SE, featuring the A13 Bionic chip from the iPhone 11 series, was introduced by Apple in 2020. Its design was based on that of the iPhone 8. A third-generation iPhone SE was released in 2022. Although it included the A15 Bionic technology from the iPhone 13 series, its design was essentially the same as the 2020 model.
