Ghana’s First Creative Arts Hall of Fame is unveiled in Sekondi by the Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture.
Ghana’s first Creative Arts Hall of Fame was joyfully launched in Sekondi by Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture Andrew Egyapa Mercer in a historic ceremony honouring World Tourism Day.
This momentous occasion honours Sekondi’s rich cultural legacy as a centre of the music industry and gives recognition to the exceptional individuals who have fuelled the thriving creative sector in the nation.
The Hall of Fame is situated in Duawusu, an Asamansudu suburb near Sekondi. This location is well-known in local legend for being the cradle of many Ghanaian musicians.
The project finds inspiration from comparable organisations across the globe that recognise the lifelong contributions of trailblazers in the creative industries. At the unveiling ceremony, the Minister said, “These halls of fame stand as testaments to the power of creativity in shaping our world and driving economic growth.”
“The creative arts sector is not only a vital contributor to our economy but also fuels tourism, stimulates export revenues, and creates numerous job opportunities,” Minister Mercer said, highlighting the importance of the creative arts to Ghana’s economy.
Some of Ghana’s most well-known figures in the creative arts, including Paapa Yankson, AB Crentsil, Felicia Abban, Ebo Taylor, Kwaw Ansah, Jewel Ackah, Joris Watenburg, Mike Eghan, Ray Allen, Gyedu Blay Ambolley, CK Mann, and Nana Bosompra, are among the inaugural class of inductees. The Minister said, “These legends—the first class of inductees—have enhanced our cultural heritage and elevated Ghana’s profile on the international scene.”
The ongoing renovations at the Centre for National Culture (CNC) in Sekondi will incorporate the National Creative Arts Hall of Fame. There are plans to duplicate this program across the nation so that each area can showcase its own artistic abilities on a stage.
The Minister declared that in order to keep up the pace of recognition, new inductees will be added every year during World Tourism Day celebrations. This will guarantee that Ghana’s singers, artists, filmmakers, and cultural giants continue to be acknowledged for their efforts.
The Ghana Tourism Authority’s CEO, Akwasi Agyeman, expressed appreciation to all of the stakeholders whose efforts made the project a success. In addition, he expressed gratitude to the Sekondi community for their continuous support in helping to realise the Creative Arts Hall of Fame. He said, “Let’s celebrate our national heroes and keep promoting the arts and culture that truly make Ghana unique together.”
authorities from the business community, traditional and religious authorities, and several youth groups were present for the ceremony. The official ceremony for induction is set for October 22, 2024.
