Michael Adangba criticises dancehall music for inciting hooliganism.

Adangba, a singer from HIGHLIFE, has caused some agitation among prominent Ghanaian artists by linking the growing incidence of youth hooliganism to dancehall music.
According to him, the general atmosphere and lyrical substance of dancehall music contribute to the rising trend of disorderly conduct among youth.

He said that the emphasis on violence, revolt, and explicit material in dancehall music was distorting the perceptions of our young people.

Adangba, who rose to fame with his political songs, recently remarked, “It’s fostering a culture of lawlessness, disrespect, and aggression, which manifests in various forms of hooliganism,” in an interview with Graphic Showbiz.

Adangba mentioned the Stonebwoy/Shatta Wale incident at the Ghana Music Awards in 2019 as an example of the music style’s negative influence, stating that the wild lifestyle was prevalent in Jamaica, where dancehall music originated.

Interestingly, Adangba blamed all of these events on Ghanaians’ ‘high taste’ for foreign things, stating that Dancehall had grown in popularity since most of our artists were not proud to identify with Highlife music.

“Currently, if you label any of the young musicians as a Highlife artist, they will outright reject it because they believe the genre is for the elderly. “We have opened our arms to everything foreign while continuing to look down on ourselves,” he said.

He discussed how the music of Nana Ampadu and other Highlife legends influenced his ability to make definite judgements while growing up without a father.
