Netizens respond after Davido’s father gives the church a billion naira (GHC9,915,939.58).

In loving remembrance of his late mother, Nnena Esther Adeleke, Dr. Adedeji Adeleke, father of famed artist Davido, has donated a generous 1 billion naira (GHC9,915,939.58) to the Cherubim and Seraphim Church.

On August 18, 2024, the Adeleke family celebrated the life of Nnena Esther Adeleke, the founder of a C&S church in Ede, Osun State, by attending a Thanksgiving service in Lagos.

Her daughter, Modupe Adeleke-Sanni, currently holds the title of Senior Mother-in-Israel, which she was known by.
Prominent people, including Davido and the governors of Lagos and Ogun states, Dapo Abiodun and Babajide Sanwo-Olu, attended the service.

In addition to causing applause and celebration at the donation’s announcement, social media users had differing opinions about the move, which generated debate.

Daniel Regha, a well-known media figure in Nigeria, has openly lambasted Davido’s father for the donation.

Daniel, who is renowned for voicing his opinions, expressed his disdain for the donation on social media.

Giving to the church is good, he said, but it is improper to give so much money in a nation where millions of people struggle with hunger and poverty.

Giving to the church is OK, but it doesn’t seem appropriate to give more than $1 billion to any church in a nation where millions of people are starving and fighting for their lives.

About 80% of the money should have been spent to create jobs, according to Regha, Davido’s father.

Online, the criticism has sparked a variety of responses and radically divergent viewpoints.

While some share Regha’s opinion and question the priorities of the wealthy in a country experiencing economic hardship, others stand by Adeleke’s choice, citing religious conviction and personal preference.

“You have no idea what a man has gained from fellowship there,” said Watchman, one of the users, in response.

“It’s all to show off,” commented HSPR, a different user, dismissing the donation as little more than a showcase for money.
