Prof. Smart Sarpong: “I don’t see the head and tail of UTAG strike.”

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) called for a statewide ban on prospecting and mining in environmentally sensitive regions, including farms, water bodies, and forest reserves, on October 10, 2024.

The National Executive Council (NEC) of UTAG conducted a referendum in which 2,153 of the 2,762 members cast “Yes” votes in favor of the strike. This demonstrated a great desire to put an immediate end to galamsey, or unlawful mining.

However, Prof. Smart Sarpong, a Research Fellow at the Kumasi Technical University, stated that the strike was unnecessary while appearing on Peace FM’s morning show “Kokrokoo.”

“I’ll plead with UTAG; The Universities are solution centres and so what is our contribution to curbing the menace (galamsey). Will this (strike) be our best solution? …Infact most of the universities are at home so I don’t see the head and tail of this strike” he indicated
