Reports state that Otto Addo would be named the Black Stars’ new coach on Friday.
Otto Addo is set to be named the new Black Stars manager by the Ghana Football Association (GFA), with a formal announcement anticipated on Friday, March 15, 2024.
The German-based coach has reportedly received a long-term contract offer from the GFA to lead Ghana’s future football efforts, according to several local media sources.
The position became vacant on January 23, 2024, when the GFA decided to fire Chris Hughton and his technical team due to Ghana’s poor performance at the most recent Africa Cup of Nations, where Ivory Coast won the tournament and Ghana failed to make it out of the group stages.
Otto Addo will succeed Chris Hughton, with whom he worked closely during his first term, if he is reappointed. After the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Hughton took on the position of head coach, having previously worked as a technical advisor.
Otto Addo’s first task if reappointed would be to prepare for the international friendlies against Nigeria and Uganda, which are slated to take place in Morocco in March 2024.
Otto Addo, whose coaching career began in 2010, does not have a long history as a manager; his most notable position was with the Ghana national team.
The former Ghana international is now Dortmund’s talent coach after starting his coaching career at Hamburger SV U19 and working as an assistant coach at Nordsjaelland.
Otto Addo managed 12 games in his first season with the Black Stars, winning four, drawing four, and losing four.
Notably, once Chris Hughton left, the position drew a lot of interest—more than 500 coaches submitted applications.
