Students at UPSA are guaranteed safety even in the absence of streetlights.
The University of Professional Studies, UPSA, is taking precautions to protect its students after hearing of an increase in thefts on campus, which the university attributes to the absence of streetlights at night, leaving the campus completely dark.
Residents and students alike have expressed concern about the increased security risk presented by the area’s lack of proper lighting.
UPSA student Isabella Shamo Lokko Bukari voiced her concerns about the state of affairs, citing occurrences of phone snatching and attacks.
She highlighted that neighbors and students living near the institution confront security dangers, and that action must be taken immediately to address them.
“I think there should be something done about it because I think there is a very serious threat to both our lives and properties—people’s phones getting stolen and people getting attacked on the road because there is no streetlight.”
Samuel Antwi, the dean of graduate studies at UPSA, revealed that talks had been undertaken with the police to improve safety along the stretch in response to the security concerns.

He underlined how crucial it is for all parties involved to work together to stop robberies from happening in the future.
Although there are police patrols in place at the moment, he continued, the length of the track makes effective surveillance difficult.
“We’ve had talks with the IGP regarding student safety; he truly cares about our university because he was a previous student here. Thus, one evening, he was on the stretch himself. He stayed there from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m., and although the police are currently on patrol, the patrol is not very long.
