With a thrilling victory over Uganda in the African Games final, Ghana’s Black Satellites take home the gold.
On Friday, March 22, 2024, in front of an enthusiastic audience of more than 40,000 spectators, Ghana’s Black Satellites defeated Uganda 1-0 in the championship match of the 13th African Games football competition.
The crowd was electrified as Jerry Afriyie’s game-winning goal in the last minute guaranteed Ghana’s gold medal, ending an intensely competitive encounter against the resolute Ugandan team.
Maintaining his successful formula from the semifinals, coach Desmond Sakyi Offei started Ghana with the same team, with Abdul Aziz and Abdul Suleman leading the attack. With unwavering tenacity, the Black Satellites pressed hard to make an early breakthrough.
Ghana celebrated after they hit the net in the first half, but referee Hilary Hambaba disallowed the goal because Uganda’s goalie, Abdu Magada, had committed an infraction. Uganda remained in the game because of Magada’s incredible efforts in goal, who made vital stops to maintain parity at the break.
Ghana dominated the second half, much to the pleasure of the fervent home fans, whose applause resounded at every move the Black Satellites made. Afriyie became a significant threat for Ghana after challenging Uganda’s defense with a strong 25-yard shot that just missed the mark.
Uganda had a great chance to steal the win as the tension increased and the clock was ticking down, but they hesitated in front of goal. That’s when Afriyie stepped up to the plate, scoring a fierce goal in the ninetieth minute to put Ghana ahead and eventually win the men’s football trophy for the African Games for the second time after they had won it in Maputo in 2011.
The triumph highlights the Black Satellites’ tenacity and resiliency in their pursuit of glory on the continent and is a significant accomplishment for Ghana’s footballing abilities.
