NSS will send staff to the US, the UK, and other countries to serve under the new policy framework.

In an interview with campus-based Radio Univers on July 8, 2024, Armstrong Essah, Director of Corporate Affairs for NSS, revealed that the National Service Scheme (NSS) will be expanding its activities outside of Ghana.

This is a major change in policy that will better align the program with national priorities and increase its influence on the local and global levels.

“All of NSS’s programs and projects have to be in line with the priorities of the country. For example, staff will be assigned and reassigned to locations that the government and the NSS decide upon each year,” Essah said.

This strategy guarantees that the NSS’s efforts are focused on areas that are essential to the country’s development objectives.

The globalization of deployment is a crucial component of this new strategy, and Essah thinks it will be a significant incentive for service members. In order to facilitate personnel exchanges, the worldwide deployment will involve cooperation with nations including Nigeria, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

“The NSS cannot focus only on Ghana. We’ve spent much too much time here. The idea of national service is widespread. We want to be able to interchange persons by integrating our processes with those of other nations. He clarified, “Our personnel would receive the same benefits and allowances from the host nation as they do from their own, and vice versa.

The purpose of this international component is to expose Ghanaian service people to various working environments and cultures, thereby expanding their perspectives and improving their skills. It is anticipated that these kinds of exchanges will strengthen international collaboration and relations in addition to benefiting the individuals engaged.

In addition, the new policy would simplify NSS operations so that they better conform to norms used by the public sector.

“All NSS operations will be optimized to align with public sector workflows. Promotions and staff grades shall follow public service guidelines. To give staff members a head start, the data gathering and registration procedures would also be improved, Essah continued.

Under a certificate of urgency, Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum proposed the NSS bill in Parliament. It has since been passed and is pending the president’s assent.

With its goal of enhancing the NSS’s contribution to national development and providing service members with exciting international prospects, this comprehensive policy framework is a revolutionary move for the organization.
