Internet access in Ghana is impacted by outages in underwater fibre optics.

The National Communications Authority (NCA) reports that there is a statewide internet disruption in Ghana, which is caused by failures on several submerged fibre optic cables that link the country.

Multiple underwater cable outages have impacted mobile and fixed data services across the country of Ghana, according to a press release from the NCA.

It said that Senegal and Cote d’Ivoire were experiencing problems with the several undersea cables that transmit international traffic. It also mentioned certain disturbances that are occurring in Portugal.

Data services in Ghana have significantly declined as a result of this.

It’s crucial to remember that Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) are putting forth constant effort to bring back full service. Furthermore, the NCA stated that the MNOs had notified the impacted customers of the disruptions through a variety of channels.

Chamber of Telecommunications in Ghana

The Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications clarified in a different press release on Thursday, March 14, 2024, that “further investigations are being carried out, as well as work to resolve the current problems to restore service to our customers.”

It claimed that although some fibre optic lines are down, others are only providing a small amount of capacity.

“To differing degrees, this is affecting the data, voice over IP (VolP), and internet services provided by Chamber members, mobile network operators, and data service providers. Customers and subscribers are currently having problems with service as a result.”

DISRUPTIONS IN UNDERSEA CABLES IMPACT DATA SERVICES

With sadness, the public is notified by the National Communications Authority (NCA) that mobile and fixed data services across the country have been impacted by various undersea cable interruptions.

There have been disturbances in Senegal, Cote d’Ivoire, and Portugal that have affected several undersea cables that transport international traffic. Data services have significantly declined nationwide as a result of this.

It’s crucial to remember that Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) are putting forth constant effort to bring back full service. Additionally, the MNOs have used a variety of methods to notify the impacted customers of the outages.

The Authority is keeping an eye on the circumstances and will notify the public as necessary.
