PRO of Charterhouse: Group of the Year is no longer competitive.
Best Group of the Year has not been included on the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) nomination list in recent years since it is no longer a competitive category, according to Robert Klah, Public Relations Officer at Charterhouse.
The gospel group Bethel Revival Choir won the Best Group of the Year award in 2021, defeating competitors including R2Bees, La Meme Gang, and DopeNation. This was the last time the award was given out.
Remarkably, when Bethel Revival Choir won the Group of the Year in 2020, they broke the unbreakable curse of a gospel group taking home the trophy for the first time.
Furthermore, since 2021, even though groups like La Meme Gang, R2Bees, and DopeNation keep putting out music and performing live, likely, the Board of TGMA has not been impressed enough with them to offer a slot for nominations in the Group of the Year category.
But in a recent interview with Graphic Showbiz, Robert Klah refuted rumours that the annual music ceremony’s different groups were intentionally left out.
“Yes, we chose to wait till they become competitive again when the Board saw that Group of the Year isn’t as competitive as it used to be, which is why we didn’t add it to the nominations list.
He said, “If a group or artist is not on the list, it simply means that they did not meet the requirements if they submitted a nomination in the year under review.”
Robert Klah urged the different organisations to submit applications for more than only the Group of the Year award because, based on their achievements in the year under consideration, they are also eligible for other competitive categories.
“The groups can still be nominated in any song or artistry category since they are still qualified to take part in the awards programme.
The ensemble known as FA is up for nomination in the Best Highlife Artiste of the Year competition.
The category will be added back into the plan if there are sufficient competing groupings in the future, he stated.
The TGMA is taking place this year on Saturday, June 1 in the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC), and preparations are already underway.
When Stonebwoy, Kofi Kinaata, Nacee, King Paluta, Amerado, and Adina, among others, perform at the main TGMA Xperience Concert in Cape Coast tomorrow, May 11, the Central Region will be treated to a musical spectacle.
Artiste of the Year is a competition this year, and Black Sherif, King Promise, Kuami Eugene, Nacee, Sarkodie, and Stonebwoy are competing.
