The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has come under fire from Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, the former Minority Leader in Parliament, for allegedly violating the constitution when it came to the Parliamentary Service Board’s reorganization.
The MP for Tamale South claims that Bagbin disregarded Article 124 of the 1992 Constitution, which requires the establishment of a committee to advise the Speaker on the reorganization of the Parliamentary Service Board after a leadership change in the Minority caucus last year.

He took issue with the reconstituted board’s extended absence, which Bagbin was chairing. Nobody, including Bagbin, is above the 1992 Constitution, Haruna Iddrisu said.
“What has the Parliamentary Service Board been doing with the Speaker as chair and Ato Forson’s participation over the past year, given the changes in the Minority leadership that occurred more than a year ago? That is unlawful, unconstitutional, and unacceptable. The 1992 Constitution does not supersede Alban Bagbin, Speaker of the House of Commons. He is subject to the constitution, therefore when we discuss illegalities, I become concerned when they violate it.
Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, on the other hand, denied Haruna Iddrisu’s allegations, claiming that Speaker Bagbin adhered to the law when reorganizing the Parliamentary Service Board.
The claim made by my esteemed Minority Leader and highly senior colleague that this has come too late is one I would like to debate with you. The documentation supports my assertion that the necessary was completed when you departed from the chair, as you claimed. You argue that Speaker [Alban] Bagbin has violated the constitution, even though I did argue that he hasn’t. The former leader of this House took the appropriate action.
