As the NPP parliamentary candidate leads Ghana Publishing Company, the NDC raises “conflict of interest” issues regarding the printing of voting papers.

Less than three months remain until the elections on December 7, raising questions about David Asante Boateng‘s tenure as Managing Director of the Ghana Publishing Company.

Known for his strong participation in the “Let My Vote Count Alliance,” a group that actively supports the NPP, David Asante is a well-known person in Ghanaian politics who has pushed for election reforms.

His choice to lead Ghana Publishing Company has caused controversy, especially when he ran for the parliamentary seat on the governing NPP’s platform.

Concerns have been raised by stakeholders regarding the consequences of his dual employment, particularly in light of the fact that Ghana Publishing Company will be in charge of printing ballots for the next elections.

His employment at Ghana Publishing Company has drawn criticism, particularly from members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), who claim he has a conflict of interest.

They worry that his control over the ballot paper production process may result in anomalies like overprinting, which could slant the election results in the NPP’s benefit.

The NDC is worried that electing a candidate who is so intimately associated with the ruling party to lead such a vital state organisation may compromise the integrity of the election process. They think that Mr. Asante’s employment at Ghana Publishing Company presents a significant danger of electoral manipulation, which would jeopardise the integrity of the voting process.

Speaking under anonymity, a senior NDC official emphasised how critical it is to address this problem in order to prevent possible electoral malpractices.

For a variety of reasons, we rejoice the symbolic eighth spot on the ballot, but we also need to be on the lookout for any overt or covert attempts by the Electoral Commission (EC) to sway the results of the polls. There is an obvious conflict of interest with David Asante’s dual function as the leader of the organisation in charge of printing the voting papers and an NPP candidate. In order to avoid any suspicion of collusion, he should have been released of his responsibilities as soon as he was nominated as the parliamentary candidate, he emphasised.

This worry is related to the NDC’s recent misgivings about the way the EC has managed the election process.

Concerns have been raised about a number of issues, including the creation of the new voter register and the omission of the guarantor system from the limited voter registration drive, by the opposition party, which has continuously accused the commission of favouring the ruling NPP.

A number of important parties have demanded that Mr. Asante be fired from his position as managing director of Ghana Publishing Company right away in order to protect the integrity of the elections. They contend that taking this action is essential to avert any possible conflicts of interest and to guarantee a transparent and equitable electoral process for all political parties and Ghanaians.
