EC rejects claims that voter registration and vote transfers are still taking place.

The Voter Registration and Vote Transfer Initiative has been rejected by the Electoral Commission (EC).

According to the statement, the 2024 Limited Voter Registration Exercise ended on May 29, 2024, and the 2024 Transfer of Votes Exercise closed on June 14, 2024, but was reopened for security personnel, inmates, and students at public universities from July 3 to 5, 2024.

In fact, following the exercise, every Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kit used for the student Transfer was deactivated. As a result, contrary to what the two in the films claimed, they could not have been used for voter registration or transfers,” it stated.

This was said in a statement released and signed by Samuel Tettey, the Deputy Chairman of the EC in charge of Operations, in reaction to two films purporting to show two women registering voters covertly and transferring votes that went viral on social media.

The claims were “calculated mischief” meant to damage the commission’s reputation and sow discontent before the general election on December 7, 2024, the commission declared. “The commission states categorically that both allegations are false,” the commission continued.

It stated that as a result, the commission has requested that the Ghana Police Service detain and punish the individuals responsible for the fabrications. “The commission finds these allegations dangerous to our democratic process and we entreat the general public to disregard them,” the statement continued.

The commission also called on all parties involved, particularly the political ones, to desist from spreading lies that could undermine national security and stability as well as state institutions.
