Telling her version of the event, Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, “Boyfriend’s Haircut with Broken Bottle.”

Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, the member of parliament for Korle Klottey, has addressed one of the well-known accusations made against her father, the late former president Jerry John Rawlings, involving a purported boyfriend of hers who was left bald after having his head shaved with a broken bottle by soldiers.

When Selassie O’Sullivan-Djentuh, the putative lover, filed an asylum claim with the British Home Office in the UK in 2000, he claimed that after ending his relationship with a young Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, he was beaten by soldiers.

“I was taken to the Castle, which serves as the capital.” After being pulled from the van, I was pummelling once more. Afterward, I was shaved with a broken bottle and an old, rusty blade. I was informed that the President had given the order to have my hair delivered to him. They claimed the President had also given them the order to murder me and discard my corpse in the ocean. I am aware that my hair was gathered. I’m not sure if the President was genuinely consulted.

“My relationship with Zanetor and the number of times I had slept with her were questioned. I suffered multiple beatings while I was being held captive.

When asked if I knew anything about the Rawlings’ estate, including their houses and properties, I said that I didn’t. The guards wanted to know how much I knew, claiming that Zanetor had revealed some secrets to me. A portion of Selassie’s five-page statement before the British Home Office states, “W.O. Budu claimed that since my mother had gone on air about my kidnapping, they could not do what they had planned, but they could chase me to any country I run to and finish me off.”

In an interview with GHOne TV, situated in Accra, on June 27, 2024, the legislator Korle Klottey made her first comments on the subject, emphasizing that her father was unrelated to the tragedy.

She described how the accusations affected her personally because, at the time, Ghanaians had no chance to hear the truth.

She added that the incident was related to a land dispute and that she had broken off her connection with Selassie at the time it occurred.

“My dad was not involved in that at all. The explanation I had heard about how it all occurred was that there was a land dispute and military personnel involved. We weren’t even pals at the time. This occurred far after both he and I had made our own decisions.

As a result, this was a little odd at first, but politics again—I believe the story was appropriate for the moment.

The fact that the tale wasn’t true and that no space was being given for the true version of the story to be told because no one really wanted to hear it at the time troubled me a lot since, at the time, I felt rather unfairly treated. Furthermore, you know, I was young and was performing my little side project, or “chief,” at the time. And I found this to be really upsetting in the end.

Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings continued, saying the accusation affected her psychologically and influenced the way she approached politics.

That’s one of the things that has caused me to be so picky about the way I approach politics. It’s one of those situations that truly shaped my conduct as a public figure because I believe that you can be good while traveling the path that leads to your desired destination. You have the freedom to choose to disagree with others and not agree with them, but I strongly oppose lying and dehumanizing others.
