Bawumia: The Galamsey War requires teamwork to be successful.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has emphasized the need for teamwork in the struggle against galamsey, or illegal mining activities.
Dr. Bawumia pointed out that without the cooperation and dedication of other stakeholders, no one person or government can successfully battle the threat and win.
Speaking on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at the Ghana Mining Vision hosted by the University of Energy and Natural Resources in Sunyani, Dr. Bawumia emphasized that effective resolution of the issue of illegal mining requires a united front and noted that the fight against the practice has not yet been won. As such, all Ghanaians should consider this.
He declared, “We cannot keep acting as though the battle has been won; in fact, we have hardly touched the surface and committed to doing more to keep our other, very precious resources, like water bodies, safe for everyone.”
He declared, “As a government, we humbly promise to uphold this commitment and utilise current opportunities to fully realise the advantages of establishing a highly resilient small-scale mining industry that will be respected not only in the sub-region but throughout the world.”
The NPP presidential candidate stated that, should he be elected, his government would emphasise finding long-term solutions that put Ghana’s environment and natural resources first.
To effectively tackle the issue of illegal mining, Dr. Bawumia recommended collaboration between government agencies, mining companies, communities, and individuals. This would help to address the obstacles posed by illegal mining and promote the sustainable growth of Ghana’s mining industry.
