Several African musicians have achieved international recognition thanks to the BET Awards, which are recognized for honoring Black success in sports, entertainment, and music.

But compared to its West African peers, Ghana has had a very small presence, as can be seen by looking at the winners of the Best International Act and Best African Act categories.

  • 2022: Tems
  • 2021: Burna Boy
  • 2020: Burna Boy
  • 2019: Burna Boy

There is a gap in recognition at this level since Ghanaian artists have not yet won the Best International Act Award.

The category is competitive, as evidenced by the domination of Nigerian performers, especially Burna Boy, who has won the award many times.

BET Best African Act Award Winners:

  • 2017: Wizkid
  • 2016: Black Coffee
  • 2015: Stonebwoy
  • 2014: Davido
  • 2013: Ice Prince
  • 2012: Wizkid , Sarkodie
  • 2011: D’banj , 2Baba

Ghana performed better in the category of Best African Act. In 2015, Stonebwoy took home the trophy, while in 2012, Sarkodie and Wizkid split first place.

These triumphs demonstrate Ghana’s impact on the rich musical history of the continent and demonstrate its influence on the African music scene.

Ghanaian musicians have made tremendous progress in the international music industry even with fewer victories in the last several years. It seems inevitable that additional Ghanaian musicians will eventually receive comparable recognition on the BET stage, given their brilliance and inventiveness.
